Fr. Peter A. Welling Council 13576 Newsletter February, 2006 GRAND KNIGHT’S REPORT Dear Brother Knights, Thanks to all the Knights who helped with our 2nd Annual Free Throw Contest. We had over 20 kids participate. Special thanks to Kevin Landwehr for coordinating the event. We received our first check for the UN-L Basketball Concessions in the amount of $1,200.00 for all the games worked through 12-31-05. Way to go Knights!! Be sure to thank all the wives and family who helped also. By the time you read this, we will have only 3 more games to cover. See the schedule and call me if you can be an alternate, we may need you. I also want to extend a Big Thank You to all the Knights who helped with the “1 Rose 1 Life” campaign after all the masses on January 14th & 15th – especially Del Ridder for coordinating the drive. So far we have collected $371.48. Most of these proceeds will go to the State Office of the Bishop’s Pastoral Plan for Pro-Life Activities directed by Greg Schleppenbach. Other recipients are our local Right-To-Life and Birthright Chapters, crisis pregnancy centers, and Pope Paul VI institute in Omaha. Hopefully, most of you were able to take part in the Pro-Life Rally and Walk for Life at the State Capitol on Saturday, January 28th. If you were unable to, please try to remember the defenseless unborn this month and try to offer up some sacrifice or penance for them. Finally, I am excited to announce that our Council will be sponsoring our first official Membership Recruitment Social Event on Sunday, February 19th, 2006 at 5:00pm in the school gym. This event is being held specifically to recruit new members to our Council in a relaxed, social setting. More details are elsewhere in this newsletter. May God Bless our Council and your family. - Grand Knight, Tom Albin KNIGHTS ENDORSE ALITO In a resolution adopted unanimously by its Board of Directors, the Knights of Columbus has endorsed the nomination of federal circuit judge Samuel Alito to the U.S. Supreme Court. Have you ever had to ask that question to a Brother Knight in our Council? If so, you are not alone. Therefore, so it will not continue to happen, the Council Officer’s have voted & approved the purchase of Name Badges for our Council Members. We ask that you wear these Name Badges to our Council meetings and functions. The Council will pick up ½ the cost and we ask that the Council Member pay the other ½. The cost per Member is $3.00. These will be engraved plastic Badges that will slip onto your shirt pocket. You are not required to purchase one now, but a bulk order now would save all of us money as the cost in the future will be higher. Please submit your order by giving $3.00 to either Bob Kelty or Mike Hosek. The payment can be submitted in person (at a meeting, for example) or by mail. FETAL ASSAULT BILL (LB57) ADVANCED Nebraska lawmakers gave first-round approval Wednesday to a bill that would make it a crime to harm a human fetus. The measure’s main opponent, Omaha Sen. Ernie Chambers, vowed to keep fighting against it. The bill was advanced on a 39-1 vote after its sponsor, Sen. Mike Foley of Lincoln, a Roman Catholic, asked lawmakers to end a filibuster against the measure. He needed 33 votes to end debate. He got 36. Senator Foley asks for your prayers and spiritual sacrifices for successful passage of this important legislation. Please pray that Our Lord will bless pro- life legislative work. Prior to this event taking place, Brother Knights will be distributing brochures about our Council and Order after each Mass on February 12th and 19th. ALL KNIGHTS AND THEIR WIVES ARE INVITED to this event, along with ALL PROSPECTIVE MEMBERS AND THEIR WIVES. Please consider volunteering time to help with this event. There will be “sign-up sheets” at the 2-1-06 General Meeting. We need Mass workers as well as soup/sandwich/dessert donations. In addition to serving as a Mass worker, each Brother Knight is asked to consider personally inviting one prospective Member (and his wife, if married) from our Parish to attend the event. It is important that we grow our Council Membership in order to more effectively serve our parish and perform other charitable works. More information on this event will follow via the phone tree, the Church bulletin, and e-mail. Questions can also be directed to Tom Albin via phone @ 477-7817. Only 27 of our Members remain “unpaid” for the 2006 membership year. You can bring check or cash to the next general meeting, or mail your payment to me; whichever is most convenient for you. Your prompt dues payment is appreciated as it saves me from sending “reminders” and from having to pay postage. Work on the Fraternal Survey is now complete with about 35% of our Council responding. Finally, thank you all for the generous levels of “Buck-a-Month” and “RSVP” support that was submitted with your 2006 dues payments. – John R. (Bob) Kelty JKELTY@UNL.EDU 3430 N 75th St, Lincoln 68507 467-3298 Morally Responsible Investing In-Line with our Catholic Doctrine Who are you doing business with? When you purchase life insurance, annuities, or long term care insurance with the Knights of Columbus, you can be rest assured that not only are you doing business with one of the top rated insurance companies in the world, but you are working with a company that is investing only with companies that do not support programs or products that are contrary to our Catholic beliefs. Not only that, but as a non-profit organization, the profits derived from the sale of these products goes to support the Church and charities, making up a good portion of the record 130 million dollars the Knights of Columbus gave to charities last year. Not a bad deal – purchasing products that help assure you and your family’s future all the while knowing that the profits from the company are going to help others. Call us today and we would be happy to sit down with you to discuss how the Knights of Columbus can be of service to you and your family. - Manuel S "Manny" Gallardo, FICF (402)423-0250 -or- mgallardo@neb.rr.com Visit our website @ www.stpatknights.org Please thank our Newsletter Sponsors (advertised on this page) with your patronage |
