Fr. Peter A. Welling Council 13576 Newsletter January, 2006 GRAND KNIGHT’S REPORT Dear Brother Knights, I hope you all had a Blessed Christmas! I pray that the upcoming New Year affords you all with plenty of opportunities to deepen your relationship with Christ, our Savior. May the Holy Spirit fill us all with new knowledge and fresh enthusiasm to renew our relationships with Christ. A special “thanks” to Terry and Paula Ryan and all those who helped to make our 2nd Annual Christmas Party a huge success. The meal was delicious and fun was had by all. The UNL Men’s Basketball Concessions are going well. We have only one opening for March 1st at this writing. If you can volunteer that evening, please e-mail me or call me @ 477-7817. On Saturday, 1-07-06, our Council will once again host our Annual Knights of Columbus Free Throw Contest @ 10:30 A.M. in the school gym. We need more help with scorekeeping and line judges, so if you can help, please call Kevin Landwehr @ 464-4794 or just show up by 10:00 A.M. at the gym. May God Bless our Council and your family. - Grand Knight, Tom Albin KNIGHT of the MONTH for JANUARY – DAVE DENSLER Our Knight of the Month for January is Dave Densler. If you have spent any time around the church or have attended or helped with a church or school function, you have likely bumped into Mike or Lori. They are currently, and have historically been, huge supporters, participants, and attendees of most all church and school functions. They most recently chaired the very successful Stars Event (Hawaain style). At the Annual St. Patrick’s Festival, Lori Chairs the “Children’s Carnival” and Mike Co-Chairs the “Bar”. Lori has served as President for the “St. Pat’s Home and School Association” and was the “Athletic Booster Club Chair” for many years. Mike served the school for many years as “Athletic Director” and with the help of his son, Adrian, has volunteered time coaching at the Junior High Level. Mike and Lori both volunteer at Mass, Mike as an Usher, and Lori selling Scrip after Mass has ended. They have two sons, Adrian and Zach. Adrian is a Pius graduate and he now makes his home in the warmer climate of Arizona. Zach is a Sophomore at Pius. He is an Altar Server. Mike works in carpentry/remodeling and Lori is employed by the State of Nebraska. Our Parish Family and our Council are both better places because of families like the Shaal’s. Thank You, Mike & Lori, for all that you do. The Making of a Saint The process of "saint making," more properly called the process for canonization, is long and complex. The candidate for sainthood must first be proposed to the local Bishop. Once the Bishop accepts and formally opens the "cause for canonization”, a thorough investigation into the person's life and work is begun. This entails an exhaustive study of the candidate's written works and, when possible, interviews with those who knew him. There is careful scrutiny of his life, virtues and weaknesses. The investigation aims at getting at the truth of the person's life and virtue. Only one who has lived a Christian life in an extraordinary manner and has manifested "heroic virtue" can be seriously considered for canonization. If the diocesan process is positive, all information is forwarded to Rome where the “Congregation for the Causes of Saints” undertakes a new investigation under the supervision of professional historians and theologians. The arguments and proofs for the person's holiness of life are refined and focused. Once complete, the evidence is presented to the Bishops and Cardinals who make up the Congregation. Their judgment is then forwarded to the Pope. The Holy Father makes the final decision to beatify or canonize the candidate for sainthood. The Holy Father looks to a sign from God as confirmation of His positive judgment concerning beatification or canonization. Miracles are a positive sign that God indeed confirms the decision of the Church. “To serve is beautiful, but only if it is done with joy and a whole heart and a free mind.” - Pearl S. Buck What Movie Was That From ? “I dunno what to do with this guy, Henry. He's an Irishman who doesn't drink, doesn't smoke, and doesn't chase dames. He's a Grand Knight in the Knights of Columbus. “ -The Sting (1973) What VERY Famous Person Said “I've had a place in my heart for the Knights of Columbus since I was a boy. You see, my father was a Knight, and he never missed an opportunity to express his pride in the KofC or join in its efforts on behalf of charity and tolerance.” Find out in the February Newsletter “One Nation, Under God…” DID YOU KNOW… The “Pledge of Allegiance” was first used in public schools on Oct. 12, 1892 during Columbus Day observances. The original wording was: "I pledge allegiance to my flag and to the Republic for which it stands: one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." The pledge has been changed a few times since. For Flag Day in 1924, "the flag of the United States of America" was officially adopted as a substitution for the phrase "my flag." In 1954, after a campaign by the Knights of Columbus and other religious leaders who insisted that the pledge needed to be distinguished from similar orations used by "godless communists” , the words "under God" were added. At that time, the prospect of atomic war between world superpowers so moved President Dwight D. Eisenhower that he directed Congress to add the two, now controversial, words. “In fidelity to the vision of Father McGivney, may you continue to seek new ways of being a leaven of the Gospel in the world and a spiritual force for the renewal of the Church in holiness, unity, and truth.” -- Pope John Paul II (Welcoming KofC Board of Directors to Rome in October, 2003) CALENDAR of EVENTS January: 3rd UNL vs. Northern Colorado – Men’s Basketball, 7:00pm – Volunteers arrive by 5:00pm 4th General Meeting, 7:30pm –Lunch before and after 6th First Friday Mass, 6:00 PM – Followed by all-night Adoration 7th K of C Free Throw Contest, 10:30am @ St. Pat’s Gym 13th Clergy Night @ Cathedral, 6:00 pm ($15 per Knight) 14-15th One Rose, One Life after all Masses 16th Martin Luther King Day 17th UNL vs. Iowa State – Men’s Basketball, 6:30pm – Volunteers arrive by 4:30pm 24th Officer’s Meeting, 6:30pm 27th Pitch Tournament, 7:00pm @ St. Pat’s Gym 28th Pro-Life Walk (Downtown Lincoln) **correction** 28th UNL vs. Missouri – Men’s Basketball, 3:00pm – Volunteers arrive by 1:00pm 29th Catholic School’s Week February: 1st General Meeting, 7:30pm – Lunch before and after 3rd First Friday Mass, 6:00pm – Followed by all-night adoration 4th UNL vs. Baylor – Men’s Basketball, 8:00pm – Volunteers arrive by 6:00pm 14th Happy Valentine’s Day 20th President’s Day observed 21st Officer’s Meeting, 6:30pm 22nd UNL vs. Colorado – Men’s Basketball, 7:00pm – Volunteers arrive by 5:00pm March: 1st Ash Wednesday 1st General Meeting, 7:30pm – Lunch before and after 1st UNL vs. Kansas State – Men’s Basketball, 7:00pm – Volunteers arrive by 5:00pm 3rd First Friday Mass/Stations, 6:00 pm – Followed by all-night Adoration 17th St. Patrick’s Day 18th St. Pat’s Festival 24th Mass for the Unborn, 6:00 pm – Followed by Stations 28th Officer’s Meeting, 6:30pm Information that you wish to have included in the next newsletter should be submitted, by the Wednesday prior to the Monthly General Meeting, to: Patrick Voichahoske 1855 Spring Meadow Dr. Lincoln, NE 68521 477-4605 pvoichahoske@alltel.net Columbian Squires The Columbian Squires is the Official Youth Organization of the Knights of Columbus. The Squires is a leadership development program for young Catholic men 12-18 years old. There are over 25,000 Catholic young men in over 1,100 local units, called Circles, throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, the Bahamas, and Guam. Nebraska has Columbian Squire Circles in Wahoo, Lincoln, McCook, Hastings, and David City. Nebraska Circles have sponsored toy drives, food pantry collections, picnics, swimming parties, baseball games, corporate communions, and a Christmas party at Villa Marie School. They help people in need, and enjoy the company of friends in social, family, athletic, cultural, civic and spiritual activities. A Squires circle must be sponsored by a Council or Assembly, but is run by and for it’s young men, under the guidance of several Knights. Squires are to be leaders, thus, to the degree they are able, they are given the opportunity to lead, by running their own meetings, investing their own members, setting their Circles’ agenda and implementing their program of activities. Squires have fun. They meet new friends, travel, play sports and socialize. They are serious-minded too. They are involved in promoting vocations, marching in defense of the unborn, feeding the hungry, clothing the poor, supporting Special Olympics, promoting Catholic Education, and countless other activities. Thus, a Squires Circle is an athletic team, a youth group, a social club, a cultural and civic improvement association, a management training course, a civil rights organization and a spiritual development program rolled into one.
